In the cabin, on their shared bed, Luther slept fitfully, holding his lover to his chest.

Run away together?

Luther imagined it. As a wolf, Noah was a beautiful silver gray with a streak of white under his chin. He was small, fast, and playful. Luther was larger, darker, and more powerful. A match even for an alpha if he fought smart. Could they be happy together, just the two of them? And what about children? Noah would want children, and Luther could not provide them. What then?

Luther pressed a kiss into his lover’s hair. As much as he wanted to run away with Noah, he knew if they did, even if they managed to escape and went far enough away that none of the Heart’s Blood can find them, eventually, Noah would want more. And then their love would turn bitter. Their freedom would become a trap. And it would all be Luther's fault for agreeing to this madcap plan.

Beyond love, Luther had vowed to himself to protect Noah and keep him safe. To do that, he would have to betray his love.

An hour before dawn, Noah stirred. He took the two packs he had packed up the night before in hand and shook Luther on the shoulder to wake him.

Luther rubbed his hand over his eye as though he had been asleep. "Now?" He asked.

"Yes."

Luther took his pack, and together, they went into the woods to hide them. As wolves didn't generally climb trees, Luther and Noah hid their packs in the branches of a tall tree. From the ground, the packs were barely visible in the dawn light. Luther marked the base of the tree with his scent. When he had finished, Noah threw himself into Luther's arms, his chin lifted for a kiss.

Luther kissed him, even as inside, his heart was breaking.

Noah must have scented the grief and guilt on him, because when they parted, he hugged Luther tighter and said, "I know it's hard for you to leave. I can go on my own."

As if Luther would ever allow that to happen. "No. We will, together."

Except they wouldn't.

"I love you," Noah said.

Luther basked in his lover's words, even as he knew he didn't deserve them.

They returned to the cabins just after dawn. Six elk had been penned in a large enclosure at the edge of the encampment. A beta, in wolf form, crouched at the entrance to the pen, growling, while two others in human form skirted along the inside perimeter of the fences holding long, scent soaked strips of fabric.

All six of the elk were large bulls. Two of the elk had the fabric tied around their necks, just tightly enough to stay in place without obstructing their breathing. They would be set free at moonrise, and the perfume-soaked fabric would be used to track them when the hunt began.

One of the betas approached the third bull, who was the largest. The bull lowered his head as the beta moved towards him, stamping at the ground as it bared its sharp, multipronged horns.
